The six-syllable mantra is named Om Mani Padme Hum. Om (ong), Mani (ma)(ni), Padme (bei)(mei), Hum (hong).
The six-syllable mantra is the most common mantra in Buddhism. It is also the crystallization of the power and blessing of Avalokitesvara (the subtle original mind), so it is also called the mantra of Avalokitesvara. It is often carved on stone or prayer wheels.
The six-syllable mantra can remove the karmic obstacles from the beginning of time, and it is like the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas personally coming to give initiation. What is even more priceless is that the six-syllable mantra uses six kinds of wisdom to cure the different troubles of the six realms of sentient beings.
- “Om” means “Buddha’s heart”. When chanting this word, the body, mouth, and mind must become one with the Buddha to achieve success.
- The two words “Mā, Ni” mean “wish-fulfilling treasure” in Sanskrit, which means “treasure heart”, also called Mani treasure. It is said that this treasure is hidden in the head of the Dragon King of the Sea. With this treasure, all kinds of treasures will gather together, so it is also called “gathering treasures”.
- The two words “Ba, Mi” mean “lotus” in Sanskrit, which means “lotus heart”, which is a metaphor for the purity of Buddhism like the Dharma and the lotus.
- “Hum” means “Vajra Heart”, which means to pray for success, that is, one must rely on the power of Buddha to achieve “enlightenment”, achieve everything, save all sentient beings, and finally become a Buddha.
Tibetan Buddhism regards these six words as the root of everything. Reciting them repeatedly can eliminate disasters, accumulate virtues, and achieve perfect merits.
The merits of the six-syllable mantra:
- Om: can eliminate the suffering of birth and death in the heavens,
- Ma: can eliminate the suffering of fighting among non-heavens,
- Ni: can eliminate the suffering of birth, aging, sickness and death in the human world,
- Ba: can eliminate the suffering of servitude among animals,
- Mi: can eliminate the suffering of hunger and thirst among hungry ghosts,
- Hum: can eliminate the suffering of hot and cold hells.
In general, the six-character mantra is a commonly used mantra in Chinese Buddhism because it can bring peace, blessings, fulfill vows, and exorcise demons to people.
